Dry skin - What are its causes and what can be done about it?

The skin is one of our most important protective barriers. It protects against the environment that surrounds us and gives us our appearance and sense of touch. When skin dries out, it can feel rough and tight, or even cracked or itchy, and your ability to perform normal functions is at risk.

Dryness is a leading cause of skin discomfort

A lack of hydration in the skin can present itself in various ways, from the typical roughness, peeling and small cracks to redness, inflammation, constant stiffness and itching. These symptoms vary depending on the severity and location of the dehydration.

Dry facial skin is based on several internal and external factors, which contribute to the same process of skin dehydration.

Dry skin on the face is uncomfortable and can age a person's appearance. Dehydration appears on the cheeks and around the eyes. Also the lips often dry out, especially in winter.

Relation of dry skin and sensitive skin

Dry skin is often sensitive and can become irritated when it comes into contact with aggressive detergents or soaps, or with unsuitable cosmetic products. When the skin's dermal barrier function is impaired, allergens, irritants, pollutants and microorganisms can penetrate more easily.

It is important to avoid skin care products that contain irritating ingredients, such as perfumes and dyes. Always check that the perfume has been dermatologically tested on sensitive skin.

Dehydrated skin is thirsty, and needs constant hydration, throughout the day. To combat dehydration, the use of creams that quench thirst, with hyaluronic acid and other moisturizing ingredients, is recommended.
